Step-by-step execution guide
Inventory and Math
Confirm your square footage and verify your tile batch numbers. Mix tiles from different boxes to ensure color consistency across the floor.
Establish the Primary Snap-Lines
Find the center of your room by measuring the midpoints of opposite walls. Snap a chalk line. Do this in both directions to create a crosshair. This is your starting point for a symmetrical layout.
The 'Dry Layout' Test
Place a row of tiles along your lines without mortar. If you end up with a tiny 1-inch sliver at the wall, shift your starting crosshair by half a tile width to ensure a balanced border.
Setting and Grouting
Spread thinset using the appropriate trowel notch. Place tiles with a slight twist to collapse ridges. Once dry, pull spacers and apply grout at a 45-degree angle to the joints.
Jobsite Safety
Always wear eye protection when cutting lumber or driving nails. One splinter can derail a weekend project. Trust the numbers, but prioritize your safety.
