Step-by-step execution guide
Room Prep and Logistics
Clear the furniture or move it to the center and cover with plastic. Clean the walls with TSP to remove grease. Tape off the trim and baseboards using a putty knife to press the tape down for a tight seal.
Sanding and Patching
Scan the walls for nail holes or scuffs. Patch with spackle, let dry, and sand flush. A smooth wall is the difference between a 'DIY' look and a professional finish.
Cutting In the Perimeter
Start with your 2-inch angled brush. Paint a 3-inch border around all trim, corners, and the ceiling line. This is called 'cutting in' and allows for faster rolling later.
Rolling the Main Surfaces
Work in 4x4 foot sections using a 'W' or 'N' pattern. Do not over-work the paint. Apply two coats for the best color depth, waiting 4 hours between coats.
Jobsite Safety
Always wear eye protection when cutting lumber or driving nails. One splinter can derail a weekend project. Trust the numbers, but prioritize your safety.
