Step-by-step execution guide
Surface Prep and Ledger
Clean the walls of grease. If your counters aren't perfectly level, screw a temporary wooden 'ledger' board to the wall to support your first row of tiles.
Mastic and Spreading
Apply mastic in small sections (3 square feet at a time). Use a 'V-notch' trowel for wall tiles to ensure the adhesive doesn't ooze out of the joints.
Outlet Navigation
Use a diamond hole saw or 'nibblers' to cut around electrical outlets. Ensure your cuts are small enough to be covered by the outlet's oversized cover plate (jumbo plate).
Grouting and Sealing
Apply un-sanded grout. Once dry, wipe with a damp sponge. CAUTION: Use 100% silicone caulk where the backsplash meets the countertop—never use grout in this transition.
Jobsite Safety
Always wear eye protection when cutting lumber or driving nails. One splinter can derail a weekend project. Trust the numbers, but prioritize your safety.
