Step-by-step execution guide
Layout and Plate Marking
Snap a chalk line on the floor. Cut your top and bottom plates to length. Lay them side-by-side and mark your stud locations every 16 inches.
Assembling the Frame
Lay the plates apart and place studs between them. Nail through the plates into the ends of the studs. Ensure the frame is square by measuring diagonals.
Raising and Plumbing
Tilt the wall up into position. Secure the bottom plate to the floor. Use a 4-foot level to ensure the wall is 'plumb' (perfectly vertical) before securing the top plate to the joists.
Blocking and Headers
Install horizontal blocking at mid-height for extra rigidity and for securing future trim. If there's a doorway, install a header supported by 'king' and 'jack' studs.
Jobsite Safety
Always wear eye protection when cutting lumber or driving nails. One splinter can derail a weekend project. Trust the numbers, but prioritize your safety.
