Gravel Driveway Project
Site preparation and volume calculation for heavy-duty base layers, driveways, and drainage basins.

Whether you are prepping a pad for a shed or building a driveway, the base layer determines the longevity of the project. This blueprint focuses on proper excavation and compaction for a lifetime of stability.

Step-by-step execution guide
Excavation and Grading
Stake out the area and dig to the required depth. For driveways, aim for 6-8 inches. For shed pads, 4 inches is usually sufficient. Grade the soil away from structures to handle water runoff.
The Foundation Membrane
Lay down heavy-duty woven landscape fabric. This prevents your expensive gravel from sinking into the soft sub-soil over time. Overlap seams by at least 12 inches.
Volumetric Calculation
Measure your finished excavation area to determine the exact tonnage needed. Gravel is heavy—getting the delivery right saves your back and your wallet.
Spreading and Compaction
Spread gravel in 2-inch 'lifts' (layers). Run a plate compactor over each lift to ensure the stones lock together. A single 6-inch pile will never compact as well as three 2-inch layers.
Jobsite Safety
Always wear eye protection when cutting lumber or driving nails. One splinter can derail a weekend project. Trust the numbers, but prioritize your safety.
