Landscaping Project: Gravel Patio Base
The foundational protocol for paver patio preparation using multiple aggregate layers and drainage considerations.

A stable paver patio starts underground. This project guide outlines the rigorous excavation and multi-layer compaction protocol needed to prevent settling and ensure proper drainage.
- Crushed Stone (3/4 inch minus)
- Coarse Leveling Sand
- Geotextile Fabric
- Edge Restraints
- Marking Paint

Step-by-step execution guide
Layout and Excavation
Mark your patio perimeter 6 inches wider than the final unit size. Excavate 7 inches deep to allow for 4 inches of gravel, 1 inch of sand, and 2 inches of paver.
Aggregate Layering
Lay down geotextile fabric. Add 2-inch 'lifts' of crushed stone, compacting each layer with the plate compactor until hit-hard.
Leveling the Sand
Place screed pipes on the compacted gravel. Spread sand and screed perfectly flat. Do not walk on the sand once it is screeded.
Edge Restraint Install
Install heavy-duty edge restraints around the perimeter using 10-inch spikes. This prevents 'creeping' and keeps the patio structure locked in place.
Jobsite Safety
Always wear eye protection when cutting lumber or driving nails. One splinter can derail a weekend project. Trust the numbers, but prioritize your safety.
