How to Calculate Gravel Needed for a Patio Base

Determine exactly how many cubic yards or tons of gravel and sand you need for a stable patio foundation.
A professional patio depends on its sub-base. The most common cause of paver failure is an insufficient or non-compacted gravel layer.
The Multi-Layer Strategy
Most patios require 4-6 inches of compacted gravel and 1 inch of leveling sand. This calculator handles the volumes for both layers.
Material Selection
For a standard patio, use 'Crushed Stone' (3/4") for the base and 'Paver Sand' for the final leveling layer. Order 15% extra to account for compaction of the gravel base.
