How Many Bags of Mulch Do I Need?

Calculate exact bags or cubic yards of mulch and topsoil for your garden beds and landscaping projects.

Preparing Your Garden

A fresh layer of mulch does more than just look good—it suppresses weeds and helps your soil retain moisture. But ordering 10 bags more than you need is a back-breaking mistake.

How Deep Should Mulch Be?

  • New Beds: Aim for 3 inches of mulch for maximum weed suppression.
  • Refresh / Annual Topping: 1 to 2 inches is usually enough if you already have a decent base.
  • Topsoil: If you are filling a new raised bed, you'll need significantly more depth (usually 6-12 inches).

Bulk vs. Bags

As a general rule, there are 27 cubic feet in 1 cubic yard. If you are buying standard 2.0 cubic foot bags from a big-box store, you'll need about 14 bags to equal one cubic yard of material.

Pro Tip

If your project requires more than 2 or 3 cubic yards, it is almost always cheaper to have it delivered in bulk rather than buying individual bags.
