How to Estimate Paint for a Ceiling

Calculate exact ceiling paint gallons based on area for both flat and vaulted surfaces.
Ceiling paint is typically a specific formulation that is more viscous and has a flatter sheen than wall paint. Getting the gallon count right prevents multiple trips for a custom mix.
The Paint Formula
Ceiling Area / Coverage per Gallon (typically 350-400 sqft) x Number of Coats. One coat is often enough for a ceiling re-fresher, but two are recommended for new drywall.
Ceiling Coverage Factor
Vaulted or popcorn-textured ceilings have significantly more surface area than a flat ceiling. Add an extra 15-20% waste factor for textured or vaulted ceilings to ensure full coverage without patchy spots.
